After linking
space requirements with function and accessibility,
a form started to evolve.
This is where our far more qualified Partner,
Nature itself, presented us with possible design
solutions.
We settled on the influence of the “Moon
Snail Shell”. This allowed us to proportion
spaces according to requirements without waste.
The organic shaped roof grows in terms of volume
as it enlarges toward the key spaces.
There are few walls and very little joinery, allowing
largely unrestricted airflow and light.
Walls and joinery are limited to air-conditioned
spaces housed together in the masonry back bone
of the structure.
From this core the large open sided shelter expands
with minimal support as the core is integral to
the whole structure, in essence mimicking the
core of the moon snail shell.
Materials consist of Malaysian certified, reclaimed
and plantation timber.
Trusses are braced and curved top chords formed
with bamboo, lower levels and wet areas use tinted
cement.
Roofing is local “attap” with secondary
waterproofing achieved with a membrane which is
insulated with bubble foil of the enclosed spaces.
The entire structure is designed to “breathe”
prolonging the lifespan of the component materials.
Lastly power and waste management will be carefully
considered minimising the need for fossil fuel,
and allowing only “clean” waste into
the environment. |
